Twilight Run: Drive Fitness Team Registration NOW OPEN


The Drive Fitness team is registered for the Brisbane Twilight Run on 24 March. You can choose between a 5km, 10km & 21km distance. The 5km starts a 4pm & both the 10 km and 21km start at 5pm. The event starts and finished at UQ St Lucia Campus.

In 2012 we welcomed new trainers to the team, expanded our Tarragindi studio, kicked off our first ever (very successful) weight loss challenge and enjoyed the fantastic opportunity to help 100's of people achieve their fitness & weight loss goals. We are very excited about next year already!

Well done to everyone who gave the 12 Days of Christmas Workout a go!


A BIG congratulations to everyone who gave the 12 Day's of Christmas Workout their best effort!

Every December at all Drive Fitness studios we 'look forward' to finding out what the 12 Day's of Christmas Workout will involve and this year's was TOUGH! No one was able to finish all 12 exercises within the 25 minute time cut off. We had some people come very close, making it to the last exercise but running out of time before finishing - this is an amazing effort.

We hope you enjoyed the challenge and felt better at the end of it then Jared did (featured above during the trainer's 12 Day's of Christmas Workout morning).

All Drive Fitness boot camps will wrap up for the year next week with the last Camp Hill session on Wednesday 19 December and the last Holland Park & Moorooka session on Thursday 20 December. Boot camps will only break for two weeks with return details outlined below.

Camp Hill: Returning Monday 7 January @ Perth Park, Perth St.

Holland Park: Returning Tuesday 8 January & NEW Saturday sessions commencing from Saturday 26 January @ Glindemann Park, Logan Rd.

12 Days of Christmas Workout is Back & Bigger than Ever!


This year's 12 Days of Christmas Workout looks like the most challenging ever!

Every year the Drive Fitness personal training team put together a workout intended to be nearly impossible. It's a 12 exercise challenge (in theme with the 12 Days of Christmas) with a 25 minute cut off - your goal is to get as far through as possible before time expires!

Saturday Boot Camp Coming to Holland Park: Starting January 2013


You asked for it! You've got it...

Following the popularity of the Saturday morning boot camps during the 8 week weight loss challenge earlier this year we had a lot of people request an ongoing Saturday morning boot camp session.
We are excited to announce the permanent addition of a Saturday morning boot camp session starting Saturday 26 January 2013, details below.

Where will sessions take place?
Glindemann Park, Logan Rd, Holland Park (our Holland Park boot camp location).

When will sessions take place? 
Every Saturday morning 6:30-7:30am starting Saturday 26 January 2013.

Who can participate?
Everyone! Any age, fitness level or exercise experience.

How much do sessions cost?
Saturday morning boot camp sessions will operate as part of our normal boot camp program at $19 per session in a 12 session pack.

How do session packs work?
If you have an active boot camp session pack you can attend any boot camp session at any of our 3 boot camp locations in Camp Hill (5:30am Monday & Wednesday), Moorooka (5:30am Tuesday & Thursdsay) and Holland Park (5:30am Tuesday, Thursday & 6:30am Saturday *NEW*)

Why are Drive Fitness boot camps more awesome than others?
Good question! For quite a few reasons... The main reason is that we keep our boot camp numbers capped lower then other boot camps. This allows us to use exercises and training methods that simply don't work with really big groups (some boot camps overload to 30 people or more). Our boot camps are also more flexible then others, if you don't turn up to a boot camp session you don't lose it. Your 12 sessions are available until you have been to 12 sessions. .

Drive Fitness Personal Trainer Trekking through the Himalayan Mountains to Mount Everest

At almost midnight on Sunday November 4th 2012, Nathan Dietrich, one of our Drive Fitness personal trainers and a Seven Hills studio crew head off bound to trek through the Himalayan Mountains to Mount Everest.

Ivor “Yeti 1” Worrell (a seven time trekker of the Himalayan mountains), Scott ‘The Ogre” Egerton (a Mount Kilimanjaro summiter), Simon “Yeti 2” Smyth (two time Everest trekker) and personal trainer Nathan “The Mule” Dietrich (total novice), will fly into to Kathmandu for 2 days.

From there they will board a plane for the small village of Lukla (and even smaller landing strip!!). They will then spend 19 days taking a different route to Mount Everest base camp trekking and carrying packs weighing approximately 17 to 20 kilograms. The route encompasses places such as Namche Bazar, Machhermo, Dragnag, and also includes summits of Gokyo Ri, crossing the Cho La pass, and then another summit of  Kala Patthar before heading back down to Everest Base Camp.

With altitudes ranging from 2800 metres (approximately 9000 feet) to 5550 metres (approximately 18500 feet), oxygen intake of only around 50% at that altitude, and temperature of  minus 7 with a wind chill factor of minus 20, this is sure to be a physically demanding adventure.

Boot Camp Challenge Results: 10 November 2012


Wet conditions and an early Saturday morning start didn't deter our boot camp challenge participants on Saturday 10 November. The reigning defending boot camp challenge champions Holland Park were looking to extend their winning streak to 3 while Moorooka and Camp Hill both were hungry to claim the prestigious title of boot camp challenge champions.

The boot camp challenge has 3 scoring events:

Event 1 - 12min 4exercise x 5rep Circuit Relay: Weight Plate Over Head Press, Sand Bag Dead Lift,  Kettlebell Sumo Dead Lift High Pull, Sit Up. 1 point awarded for each round completed within the 12 minute time period. 

Camp Hill: 36, Moorooka: 50, Holland Park: 48

Event 2 - Medicine Ball Throw for Distance: Over Head Throw, Chest Pass, Backwards Over Head Throw. 3 points awarded for the longest throw, 2 for second longest and 1 for third longest. 

Camp Hill: 96, Moorooka: 95, Holland Park: 96

Event 3 - Prowler Push Relay. 1 point awarded for each complete shuttle prowler push where the allowed time was determined by how long it took the other boot camps to complete 20 burpess per person. 

Camp Hill: 9, Moorooka: 13, Holland Park: 8

Congratulations to the winning boot camp and NEW Boot Camp Challenge Champions MOOROOKA with a total score of 158, closely followed by Holland Park in 2nd place on 152 and Camp Hill in 3rd with 141. 

An honourable mention goes to Ross Woods for his horizontal dive finish in the dieing seconds of the prowler push relay. Unfortunately it didn't score a point but it was an impressive show of commitment none the less.

Weight Loss Challenge Winners Announced


Congratulations to all Weight Loss Challenge participants! We had a total of 263.7kg lost during the 8 weeks!

Congratulations to everyone who achieved their weight loss goal and to those of you who got your weight loss journey started. All the best with your continued efforts to either lose more weight or maintain your new body weight.

The renewed motivation in the studios and at boot camp during the weight loss challenge was exciting and inspiring. Thank you for supporting each and enjoying in each other's success. We hope everyone has finished the weight loss challenge having either learnt something new about exercise and nutrition or with greater motivation!

A BIG congratulations to our top 3 8 week weight loss challenge winners! As impossible as it may sound we had a tie for first place and very close runner up.

Dead Lift Challenge Full Results


Well done to everyone who participated in the 2nd Annual Drive Fitness Dead Lift Challenge on Saturday 27 October. This was the first strength challenge hosted by the Tarragindi studio since 2009 and it was great to put the extra spae at our new Tarragindi studio to good use. Congratulations to those who achieved a personal best and a special congratulations to our winners and biggest lifters on the day!

The Dead Lift Challenge is Here!

Registration is closed and numbers are finalised. We have 55 participants lifting in the 2nd Annual Drive Fitness Dead Lift Challenge this Saturday 27 November!

From all the trainers at Drive Fitness we hope everyone participating achieves a personal best lift and enjoys the event. Spectators welcome - come down and support everyone as they attempt a max dead lift.

What is it?
A fun &  social community building event with a fitness challenge attached! Challenge yourself to Dead Lift as much as possible for a single repetition. Your score is relative to your body weight (Max Lift / Body Weight). Morning tea provided and medal presentation to follow for 1st, 2nd, 3rd & biggest lift for men and women. Come along & support others as we all try to achieve a personal best! 

Who can participate
Everyone who trains at Drive Fitness.

When is it? 
Saturday 27 October. Starting 7am sharp with weigh in & warm up and lifting to commence by 7:30am. Medal presentation taking place at 9:30am.

Boot Camp Challenge: Saturday 10 November


Boot Camp Challenge is back! All 3 Drive Fitness boot camps will come together for some friendly fitness competition.

What is it?
The last Boot Camp Challenge for 2012! A fun, friendly competition where your 'favourite' boot camp exercises are combined into team challenges.


Who can participate?
All Drive Fitness boot campers from Holland Park, Moorooka & Camp Hill. Join in and represent your boot camp!


When is it?
Saturday 10 November. Starting at 6:30am and wrapping up by 7:30am including morning tea and presentation.

Where is it?
Glindemann Park, Logan Rd, Holland Park.

Sports drinks VS water: what's recommended

Staying hydrated during exercise is important for your health and training performance but the fluids you choose could actually be working against your weight loss efforts. Unlike soft drink which is an obvious poor choice, sports drinks such as gatorade and powerade introduce an interesting problem for those of you exercising for weight loss. When are sports drinks required or are they are necessary at all? Could sports drinks be preventing you from reaching your weight loss goals? Let's take a look..

Kilojoules & calories: how to convert between them? Answered in 100 words or less

Kilojoules (kj) & calories (cal) are both used to measure the amount of energy in foods and drinks, the same as kilometres and miles are both used to measure distance.

In Australia kj is preferred however US TV shows (such as the biggest loser) and cardio equipment made overseas (such as treadmills) make it difficult to let go of cal completely. For this reason it's useful to be able to quickly convert between them if necessary.

1cal = 4.2kj. You can do a rough calculation of 'cal x 4 = kj', which will be close enough for most purposes.

The 2012 Drive Fitness Dead Lift Challenge is coming! Saturday 27 October!

Don't miss the last Drive Fitness strength challenge for the year. Over 40 people took to the bar in last year's Dead Lift Challenge & this year is set to be BIGGER & BETTER!

What is it?
A fun &  social community building event with a fitness challenge attached! Challenge yourself to Dead Lift as much as possible for a single repetition. Your score is relative to your body weight (Max Lift / Body Weight). Morning tea provided and medal presentation to follow for 1st, 2nd, 3rd & biggest lift for men and women. Come along & support others as we all try to achieve a personal best! 

Who can participate
Everyone who trains at Drive Fitness.

When is it? 
Saturday 27 October. Starting 7am sharp with weigh in & warm up and lifting to commence by 7:30am. Medal presentation taking place at 9:30am.

Boot Camp Is Back in the Park!


After relocating all boot camps to the nearest Drive Fitness studio during winter we are ready to move things back to the park. From next week (Monday 24 September) all 3 Drive Fitness boot camps will be back at their original outdoor location.


  • Camp Hill Boot Camp will return to Perth Park on Perth St. Monday & Wednesday 5:30am.
  • Holland Park Boot Camp will return to Glindemann Park on Logan Rd. Tuesday & Thursday 5:30am. 
  • Moorooka Boot Camp will return to Pegg's Park on Koala Rd. Tuesday & Thursday 5:30am.

Weight Loss Challenge Week 1 Update


Congratulations to all Weight Loss Challenge participants for getting the ball rolling last week! We had roughly 70 people weigh in during week 1 and from all reports motivation in the Drive Fitness studios is at an all time high. We have had some great weight loss goals set and all trainers are enthusiastic to see these goals achieved.

The Saturday morning boot camps got off to a great start with 20 people attending the 6:30am session and 12 attending both the 7:30am and the 8:30am sessions. These boot camps continue weekly during the 8 week weight loss challenge. Click here to see the full weight loss challenge schedule of events for more details. 

The first seminar on Tuesday 11 September addressed 7 weight loss myths that you should NOT  believe. These include:
  1. That you need to find the secret diet to lose weight.
  2. That some foods burn more energy to digest then they provide and can lead to rapid weight loss as result.
  3. That foods labelled low fat, no added sugar and 99% fat free can be eaten in unlimited quantities while trying to lose weight.
  4. That organic food is weight loss food and you can eat as much of it as you like.
  5. That very low energy diets are the best solution for long term weight loss.
  6. That cutting out carbohydrates after lunch time will magically result in weight loss.
  7. That weight loss is difficult - it's not, everybody can lose weight!

I get asked this question quite frequently: Can you burn fat from a specific part of the body by concentrating exercises on that area? Infomercials advertising the 'latest and greatest' ab machines claim this is possible but common sense makes most of us second guess. Why Should Everyone Dead Lift?


The 2nd Annual Drive Fitness Dead Lift Challenge is now less than 2 months away - taking place on 27 October 2012.

It is fitting that we introduce the dead lift and explain why everyone should include it (or a variation of it) in their training program.

The dead lift is widely considered to be one of the best exercises for building all over body strength. In a lot of people's opinion (including mine) it is the 'king of all lifts' and it serves a very obvious functional skill transfer to many daily tasks and sporting movements. It is one of the 3 lifts along with the back squat and bench press that combine to form the sport of power lifting and it is a core component of the 2 Olympic lifts clean and jerk and snatch.

The dead lift should not be limited to exercise programs for elite athletes and weight lifters, rather, everyone can benefit from what the dead lift has to offer. The dead lift recruits the muscles of the back (upper and lower), abs, legs (front and back), glutes, arms and shoulders while developing core strength and stability and grip strength. So much on offer from one single movement!

The demand of working multiple large muscle groups through a full range of motion is exhausting which makes it a great exercise for weight control due to the energy demand and metabolic benefit. This makes the dead lift a great exercise for weight loss, fitness, strength and power training programs.

8 Week Weight Loss Challenge: Details, Prizes & Schedule of Events



It all starts this Monday 10 September! First weigh in will take place between Monday 10 - Friday 14 September. Make sure you have your personal training times all organised so you can get your weekly weigh in with your trainer!

Simply weigh in with your personal trainer every week for 8 weeks during your personal training session and achieve the greatest % of weight loss possible! Before & after photos are encouraged but completely optional, waist, hip, thigh and arm circumferences will be measured in weeks 1 & 8 but will not be factored in to the final score. Winners are determined by % of body weight lost only.
