Serving sizes summarised

large big mac value meal -
how many serves in this?
How much is a serve? How much is enough? Our perspective of appropriate portion sizes has been distorted by the quantities served up in fast food combos and on restaurant plates. When you actually look at how much food equals a single serve you may be shocked! Eating appropriate serving sizes requires 2 things,  (1) you know what a single serving size equals and (2) you have the self discipline to eat only an appropriate number of servings. After reading this only the 2nd one can be used as an excuse.

Weight loss myths: the fat burning zone

"Exercising at a lower intensity for longer is the most effective training for weight loss".

Have you heard this before? I find myself discussing this misconception frequently, particularly with new clients who are trying to understand the philosophy behind the training programs I prepare for them. The 'fat burning zone' is possibly the biggest myth surrounding training and weight loss, up there with 'spot reduction' and 'lifting light weights with more reps for toning' (we will get to these another time). Don't get me wrong, endurance training is obviously necessary for the endurance athlete. What I don't agree with is endurance training as the main exercise method for weight loss. Why? Because it doesn't work. Why not and what should I do instead? Read on...

Brisbane Kokoda Challenge: What you need to know & how to register

  • The Brisbane Kokoda Challenge will be held on June 3 and starts at 7am from Brookfield Showgrounds. The course is in D'Aguilar State Forest (course map below) and has a 9 hour time limit.

  • The Brisbane Kokoda Challenge is a team event and you must enter a team of: 2, 3 or 4. You must start and finish with all team members.  Registration costs $70 per person and you are encouraged to fund raise for your team. Having a team with people of a similar fitness level is recommended.

  • You are encouraged to begin finding a team immediately and register as soon as possible, it is expected that this event will reach capacity and we don't want anyone missing out. If you don't have a team and you would like to join with others from Drive Fitness please contact David on 0402 358 127 or dave@drivefitness.net or leave your name with your personal trainer during your next training session. There will be a sheet available at Drive Fitness studios for you to write your name and contact number if you are looking for a team.

  • You will be raising money for The Kokoda Challenge Youth Program.  Your contribution is helping young people to gain confidence, direction, life skills, new friends and the knowledge that anything is possible

  • If you have a team ready to go you can proceed with the registration by following this link: Brisbane Kokoda Resgistration 2012. You will need all team member's details to complete registration.

Congratulations Twilight Runners - Results

Well done to the Drive Fitness team participants who completed the Twilight Run on Sunday 18 March. I found the run tough in comparison to other 10km courses I have done in the past and it felt quite humid at 4pm when the race kicked off. Despite falling considerably short of my personal best 10km time I enjoyed the challenge and the training and I hope everyone else did too.

Time to re-focus for the up and coming challenge - Brisbane Kokoda Challenge in June! Following this, the Bridge to Brisbane in August / September.

I will see everyone back at walk & run club this Saturday for a timed Toohey Forest loop!

Twilight Run: Less Than 200 Spots Left!

We are now less than 2 weeks out from the Twilight Run and there are less than 200 spots left. There is a 3km, 10km and 21km race option available so all fitness levels can participate. The Drive Fitness team is slowly starting to grow and we would love to see some late entries.

Click here to register and join the Drive Fitness team!

Brisbane Kokoda Challenge Date Announcement: 3 June 2012

Registration opens 14 March. Drive Fitness will be helping to organise and enter teams. For more details contact Dave on 0402 358 127 or dave@drivefitness.net
In honour of the Kokoda Spirit, this 30km event winds through some of Brisbane’s toughest terrain.
The track undulates through the green scenery in the west of Brisbane Forest Park. Starting at Brookfield Showgrounds, you and your team will make your way up to the half way checkpoint at McAfee’s Lookout, before returning to showgrounds via the tropical terrain of D’Aguilar National Park, reminiscent of the Owen Stanley Ranges in Papua New Guinea.
The 30k distance, coupled with wide open fire trails, makes this the perfect event for beginners or runners having a hit out. Teams of two, three and four will find the course is not without toils, as you descend down to a creek bed you encounter a sharp turn onto a narrow trail aptly named ‘hell hole’ - ensuring that you don’t forget the meaning of endurance before arriving at the finish line.
If you want to test your fitness (and toughness) this event is for you!

Boot Camp Challenge Results: 3 March 2012

Camp Hill, Holland Park and Moorooka boot camp groups went at it again on the 3 March 2012! Defending champions Holland Park were looking to extend their winning streak to 2 while former champions Moorooka were eager to reclaim the title they won this time last year and had lost only months earlier. Camp Hill showed up with their biggest team to date which made it clear that they could not be overlooked.

There were three scoring events:
  1. Rob the nest using medicine balls, weight plates, sandbags and kettlebells. Points were calculated by taking the total weight in the nest at the end of the round divided by the number of team members.
  2. Dead lift, push up, kettlebell high pull & medicine ball slam relay. 1 point was awarded for each time a team member reached the end of the relay in the given time period.
  3. Sandbag shuttle runs requiring the rest of the team to be powering the shuttle run with weight plate ground to overheads and sit ups. 1 point was awarded for each time the sandbag was transported to the end of a shuttle in the given time period.
Well done to all boot campers who participated in the boot camp challenge, everyone put it in 100%. The great effort put in by everyone was reflected on the very close score board.

Finals scores had Seven Hills in 3rd place on 109, Moorooka in 2nd place on 121 and Holland Park in 1st place on 133 points making Holland Park, for the second time in a row, the boot camp challenge champions.

The honourable mention for this boot camp challenge goes to Stef for a huge show of commitment in the dying seconds of the last event. Stef scored one final point on the buzzer with an impressive slip at top speed while carrying the sandbag. This was a fantastic finish to a great morning.

For photos of the the boot camp challenge check out our facebook page: www.facebook.com/drivefitness
