Rower coming to Tarragindi

We have been using rowing at Drive Fitness Mt Gravatt for the last couple months and we have had some great feedback. In response Drive Fitness Tarragindi is next in line. The latest Concept 2 Model E rowing machine is due to arrive within the next few days!

The arrival of the NEW rowing machine will add even more variety to our personal training sessions at our Tarragindi studio.

Why did we decide to introduce rowing to Drive Fitness personal training sessions?
  • Provides a superb aerobic work-out.
  • Benefits heart and lungs with superb cardiovascular conditioning.
  • Is a time-efficient form of exercise and an excellent stress-reliever.
  • Is weight-supporting and non-jarring and so is ideal for rehabilitative exercise.
  • It can be a very effective fat burning and weight loss exercise.
  • It is a lifelong exercise, suitable for people of all ages.
  • It provides a smooth, rhythmic movement that is both safe and enjoyable.

Kokoda Challenge Brisbane Update: 10 Days to go...

Drive Fitness has 9 teams participating in this year's Kokoda Challenge Brisbane. This event raises money for youth services and you can make a donation by clicking on one of the team's fundraising pages below.

All the best to all teams as they take on the 30km trail on Sunday 3 June. Remember to print, sign and return your waiver ASAP! Click here for more info about the waiver.

More info about the Kokoda Challenge Brisbane below:
In honour of the Kokoda Spirit, this 30km event winds through some of Brisbane’s toughest terrain.
The track undulates through the green scenery in the west of Brisbane Forest Park. Starting at Brookfield Showgrounds, you and your team will make your way up to the half way checkpoint at McAfee’s Lookout, before returning to showgrounds via the tropical terrain of D’Aguilar National Park, reminiscent of the Owen Stanley Ranges in Papua New Guinea.
The 30k distance, coupled with wide open fire trails, makes this the perfect event for beginners or runners having a hit out. Teams of two, three and four will find the course is not without toils, as you descend down to a creek bed you encounter a sharp turn onto a narrow trail aptly named ‘hell hole’ - ensuring that you don’t forget the meaning of endurance before arriving at the finish line.

What time should you STOP eating carbohydrates?

After 9pm? After 6pm? After lunch? When should you really stop eating carbohydrates if you are trying to  burn body fat? Before I started writing this I had a bit of a GOOGLE out of interest. After opening most of the websites on the top 2 pages of search results I had read recommendations from 12noon to 9pm and almost every hour in-between. If you're confused about when to 'cut off the carbs' I'm not surprised. I started web searching out of interest already knowing the answer and I was confused by the time I finished. Despite all the different recommendations out there this is a fairly easy one to explain and I'm going to do it in 100 words or less. Here we go.

Fibre: why do we need it and where do we get it?

With so much nutrition information out there fibre is often overlooked as a dietary priority. Here are some reasons why you shouldn't overlook it any longer!

Weight loss & weight control
Dietary Fibre can assist weight loss and weight control by: (1) lowering fat absorption from the gut which reduces total energy absorbed, (2) creating a feeling of fullness sooner and for longer which controls appetite and reduces total energy consumed and (3) slowing the absorption of carbohydrate and sugar from the gut which stabilises blood glucose and insulin levels and reduces fat storage.

Decreased risk of developing diabetes & cardiovascular disease
Dietary fibre can help improve a number of risk factors for developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It reduces these risks by: (1) reducing cholesterol absorption from the gut which lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol, (2) stabilising blood glucose and insulin levels and increasing insulin sensitivity and (3) lowering body weight / body fat by the mechanisms discussed above.

Bowel health
Dietary fibre helps to soften and bulk stools and promote regular bowel movements. This reduces constipation and may be protective against colorectal cancer.

So which foods contain fibre and how much do I need? How about some practical easy to follow guidelines for achieving adequate fibre intake? I hear you...
